Zoom vs Fixed Magnification
Zoom vs. Fixed lens: Selecting the right system for your imaging needs
While Fixed lenses offer less cost and generally longer service life than Zoom lenses (due to lack of moving parts), a zoom lens affords several advantages over  fixed-magnfication (or single-focal length) lenses, depending upon your intended application.

RESEARCH & INSPECTION
A zoom provides the ability to rapidly scan a large area and then magnify a point of interest to see fine detail without changing optics or refocusing. Additionally, zoom typically enables you to stop and inspect at any point in the magnfication range. Both features combine to deliver faster analytical flexibility, greater inspection accuracy, and ultimately higher throughput.

AUTOMATED IMAGING
Many automated manufacturing and inspection systems are required to process a wide variety of object sizes. For the software, controller or driving computer to achieve maximum accuracy it is desirable to use as much of the imaging sensor as possible. Thus, as the object size is increased or decreased, the magnification can be decreased or increased respectively. All Optem® Zoom Optical Systems (except for the Optem® MVZL) are now available with computer control capabilities that permit rapid changeover of job set ups using preprogrammed codes and standard line operators.
